Michigan has lost its highest rated commit in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

On300 Rancho (Calif.) Santa Margarita EDGE Collins Acheampong flipped his commitment from Michigan to Miami on Tuesday night in a bit of a recruiting stunner.

Acheampong told The Wolverine just last night that he remained solid to the Wolverines despite taking visits to Pac-12 programs UCLA and USC. The true threat, however, was hidden in plain sight.

Acheampong committed to Michigan over Miami in the summer in an extremely close decision. Acheampong was impressed with Miami’s NIL pitch but picked Michigan based on its transformational experience. However, Miami never lost contact with Acheampong.

“It’s been up there for me in terms of relationships with the coaches from Day 1,” Acheampong told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. “Loved my visit there as well and it did feel like home . That’s why I struggled committing because I was split between the two schools. I loved what Harbaugh had done in the past for the Africans and his kind heart as well. Since I knew them first as well as going there with my brother Enow was the icing on the cake for me going to Michigan . A lot has happened since my commitment for sure and Miami still stayed in touch even after I closed my recruitment. They kept it going and caring for me as a person as they always did and so the love kept growing.”

The Hurricanes made another aggressive NIL pitch and despite not hosting him for a visit this fall, Mario Cristobal and company were able to flip him from Michigan, which is fresh off a win over Ohio State and will be playing for a Big Ten title this weekend.

At 6-foot-8, 272 pounds, Acheampong is ranked as the No. 15 EDGE and No. 105 overall prospect nationally, per On3.

Acheampong has an On3 NIL Valuation of $15.9K with 12.9K combined followers on Instagram and Twitter. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

Michigan now has 18 commits in its 2023 recruiting class — On300 offensive lineman Nathan Efobi, On300 offensive tackle Evan Link, On300 EDGE Enow Etta, consensus four-star offensive lineman Amir Herring, four-star running back Cole Cabana, four-star linebacker Semaj Bridgeman, four-star tight end Deakon Tonielli, three-star wide receivers Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore, three-star defensive lineman Brooks Bahr, three-star running back Benjamin Hall, three-star EDGE Aymeric Koumba, three-star tight end Zack Marshall, three-star athletes Kendrick Bell and Jason Hewlett, three-star linebacker Breeon Ishmail, three-star cornerback Cameron Calhoun and three-star kicker Adam Samaha.
