TheWolverine.com‘s Clayton Sayfie, Chris Balas and Anthony Broome discuss new Michigan Wolverines basketball commit Papa Kante, a four-star center out of South Kent (Conn.) School. We discuss how it went down, what Kante brings to the table, roster implications and more.

Kante chose Michigan over fellow finalists Maryland, Memphis, Rutgers and Pittsburgh, announcing his decision Thursday evening (Oct. 20). Kante is the No. 76 overall player and seventh-best center nationally in his class, per the On3 Consensus. He ranks No. 32 overall via On3’s rankings. He’s the first member of the Wolverines’ 2023 class.

Michigan has three true big men on its current roster in junior Hunter Dickinson and freshman Tarris Reed Jr. There was a desperate need to add another to the fold for 2023 and beyond, and head coach Juwan Howard was able to seal the deal. Kante is the first member of Michigan’s class, and the Wolverines have to pick up the pace if they wish to sign multiple members in November.

Michigan basketball begins its season Nov. 7 with a home game against Purdue Fort Wayne.
