Jordan Marshall was heroic on Michigan’s final drive, and all game, finishing with 185 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground, and the Wolverines ran out the clock, winning 21-16 over Purdue.

Purdue drove down 67 yards in 9 plays, and ran a screen pass to Malachi Thomas on 3rd and goal from the 5-yard line for a touchdown. The Boilermakers went for two but the pass from Ryan Browne was intercepted in the end zone by Mason Curtis. Michigan’s lead is 21-16 with 6 minutes left.

Michigan went on a 9-play, 50-yard drive after a fourth-down stop — and Jordan Marshall ran for a 9-yard score on 2nd and goal following a first-down sack for a loss of 7 yards. Marshall powered through a host of Purdue players and emerged from a scrum to pop into the end zone. Michigan’s lead is 21-10 with 10:03 to go.

Michigan just got down to the Purdue 12-yard line on a double flea flicker complete from Bryce Underwood to Zack Marshall for a 37-yard gain. But on the next play, Underwood took a designed run right, was headed toward the goal line and had the ball punched out by CJ Nunnally IV. It went out of the end zone for a touchback — Purdue ball at the 20-yard line. Michigan had a golden chance to extend its lead, but now the Boilermakers can take the lead with a touchdown, beginning this possession with 3:42 to go in the third quarter.

Michigan went three-and-out to begin the second half, after Andrew Marsh stumbled and fumbled on the opening kickoff return. Purdue needed to go only 35 yards to get into field goal range, with Spencer Porath hitting a career-long 50-yard field goal. Michigan’s lead is only 14-10 with 9 minutes to go in the third quarter.

Michigan’s defense got a quick stop and gave the offense the ball back, and it was great field position, beginning at the 32-yard line because of a shanked punt by Jack McCallister. The Wolverines needed only five plays and 41 seconds, with Jordan Marshall scoring his second touchdown of the night with 17 seconds remaining in the half. Michigan is up 14-7.

Michigan faced 3rd and 6 from the Purdue 19-yard line, scrambled to his left, threw toward Andrew Marsh and the ball was picked off by Purdue cornerback Hudauri Hines at the 5-yard line. That’s where Purdue will take over at the 1:59 mark of the second quarter.

Purdue picked up a fourth-and-2 to keep the drive alive, and a pass interference in the end zone by Jyaire Hill later placed the ball at the 2-yard line. On first and goal, Antonio Harris fought his way into the end zone, the extra point tying the game 7-7. There’s 6:55 to go in the first half. That Purdue scoring drive was 16 plays, 75 yards, taking 9:30 of clock time.

Michigan had only 24 yards of offense coming into the third drive of the game, but momentum shifted quickly for the Wolverines with a two-play, 79-yard drive after the defense forced another punt. Jordan Marshall had a 25-yard reception on a screen pass and then ran 54 yards for a score to go up 7-0 with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter.

Michigan has forced a turnover in every game this season, that streak continuing tonight. On 2nd and 7 from the U-M 19-yard line, Ryan Browne had the ball dislodged by Derrick Moore, who’s credited with a strip sack, and recovered by Rayshaun Benny at the 28. That’s where the Wolverines take over with 5:29 to go in the first quarter, the score 0-0.

Jaishawn Barham injury

Michigan senior Jaishawn Barham started at off-ball linebacker Ernest Hausmann but came off the field after one play (upper body), went to the medical tent and is now headed to the locker room. Troy Bowles and Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng have replaced him.
As for the defense, Derrick Moore had a sack on third down, forcing a punt. The Wolverines take over on their own 9-yard line.
