Podcast: Michigan makes a staff change, draws Texas in the Citrus Bowl

The Michigan Wolverines are heading into a matchup with the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl, which could serve as a springboard into 2026 if it is handled appropriately. Change for next season has already materialized in the form of Kerry Coombs as the team’s new special teams coordinator.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discuss the bowl matchup with Texas, Coombs joining the staff as its special teams coordinator, basketball rolling Rutgers and your questions.

“A 10 win season would be pretty good, and it’s not an exhibition,” Sayfie said. “This game matters. This game counts. It counts the same as any other game. And anytime Michigan takes the field, it’s historic. You’re the winningest program of all time, trying to continue to stack wins. So it’s big. And I loved Sherrone Moore’s answer. Somebody asked, you have a lot of guys on the defensive line that are going to be leaving after this season. How are you going to handle the snaps in the bowl game?

“He said, ‘We’re gonna play to win.’ Which was exactly what they should do. They should put all their chips in the middle, do everything they possibly can to win this game. That’s how you operate as a football team. Now, if guys decide they don’t want to play, which would be extremely unfortunate. Then you go with the best guys that you do have that are available to you.

“But I like that approach a lot. Michigan had a ton of guys opt out of last year’s bowl game, and they still won. It’s funny, Michigan was looked at as the team that didn’t really wanna be there, and Alabama was the team where pretty much everybody opted in. They decided they wanted to play. They decided they wanted to prove that they should have been in the College football Playoff. Michigan’s the one that wins that game and what was still one of the weirder first quarters in games overall that I’ve ever seen.

“But this should be a pretty good matchup. Michigan doesn’t have that big marquee win. Texas has multiple of those this season.”
