Podcast: What's next after Michigan's lopsided loss to Ohio State?

The Michigan Wolverines finished the regular season 9-3 after a 27-9 loss to Ohio State on Saturday, which was the third double-digit loss of the season and 7th in the last two years under head coach Sherrone Moore.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discuss the loss to Ohio State, where the football program needs to go next, other Big Ten hires, hoops’ big week in Vegas and more.

“It could have devolved into something different than I guess what was expected if you score touchdowns on those first two drives instead of just settling for the field goals,” Sayfie said on the show. “The long play on the first play kind of got them three points at the very least. So at least it did something. The offense with the uninspiring performance… I mean, you didn’t score a touchdown in a game for the first time since 2014. You had 163 yards. It’s the fewest amount of yards you’ve had in a game since the Iowa game in 2013.

“There have been a lot of things this year that it’s like, ‘oh, it’s the first since the Brady Hoke years,’ You never want that. In Jim Harbaugh, there were times when it was, ‘oh, this is the first since the 1970s, and this is the first since 1997.’ When things don’t go as well, you harken back to some of the leaner years, which is unfortunate, but that’s the type of offensive performance it was.

“You have to credit Ohio State’s defense because it is probably the best defense in the country, but he just felt like Michigan should have been able to get more. Unfortunately, you didn’t have Justice Haynes or Jordan Marshall really at his full capability. Obviously tried to go and came back in late, but was nowhere near effective. You end up with -8 rushing yards in the second half. The problem with this game was not that it was a surprising dud, as you put it. But was that this is kind of how Michigan played all year in games like this. And that’s why I picked Ohio State… it was hard to find positives in the game.”
