Sherrone Moore and Michigan got a bad break Saturday when a ball that should have been ruled incomplete instead was called a touchdown in a 38-17 loss to Oregon. Instead, replay officials blew it. Moore elaborated today on his team’s process for challenging calls after we asked him Saturday if they had anyone in the booth dedicated to watching replays.

The play came early in the game on third and two when Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel threw to Evan Stewart. Aamir Hall had good coverage, but somehow the ball got through, only to be dropped … and still called a touchdown. Referee Ron Snodgrass said after the game they got the thumbs up from the replay booth — confirmation of a touchdown — before allowing the extra point.

Moore expressed disappointment after the game that it wasn’t reviewed more thoroughly. Monday, he confirmed they had people dedicated to watching replays.

“Everybody … we’re all looking at every play and the review, the angles that were shown for us to see were shown at the time,” Moore said. “Obviously, you saw the TV copy. The ball went through the guy’s hands and hit the ground. So, it should have been reviewed, but we’ll leave it at that.

“We have guys in the box. Everybody watches every play and every film, so I think it’s a collective effort of everybody always watching that. Whether that angle in the box was seen initially, whatever it is, it was obviously seen on the TV copy.”

Michigan injuries piling up

Michigan clearly missed both corners Saturday, Will Johnson and Jyaire Hill having sat with injuries. At least one is trending positively to play at Indiana, Moore said.

“Both working through it, pushing,” Moore said. “It seems like Jyaire is trending on probably playing, but we’ll see, and we’ll see with Will how he goes this week.”

Michigan’s offensive line, too, is taking a beating. Andrew Gentry is out of for the season, while Jeff Persi suffered an injury during Saturday’s game that knocked him out. Right tackle Evan Link was also limping after the game.

“Foot injury of some sort. He’ll be back healthy in the spring, but he’ll be out the rest of the year,” Moore said of Gentry. “Persi got a lower body extremity thing, which I think he’ll end up bing okay. We’ll see how it works out this week. Evan Link ended up being okay.”

Senior safety Rod Moore has been out since spring with a knee injury, and Moore remained non-committal on a return.

“We’ll see. Not really sure, not 100 percent where he’s trending,” he said. “I know he’s been moving around a little bit, but we’ll always just go with the doctor’s opinion. We’ll be more cautious than anything with that.”
