Michigan picked up a verbal commitment from three-star athlete Jason Hewlett just two days after U-M’s win over Ohio State on Saturday.

The Youngstown (Ohio) Chaney product sided with Michigan over offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and others.

The Wolverine’s EJ Holland shares his thoughts on Hewlett and explains how the Wolverines were able to seal the deal with the late riser.

Hewlett backed off of his pledge to Cincinnati earlier this month and immediately began trending towards Michigan. U-M hosted him for an unofficial visit for the game against Illinois and made him a top priority.

It was there where Hewlett really got an in-depth look at the program and fell in love. Michigan co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale also played a big role in his decision.

“Coach Clink keeps it real,” Hewlett said. “Not a lot of college coaches or college recruiters do that. They don’t always tell you what you need to hear but coach Clink always keeps it real. He isn’t telling you what you want to hear, he’s telling you what’s going to happen, and how you’ll end up playing (while at Michigan). That’s something that I really respect because I want to hear the real.”

At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Hewlett is ranked as the No. 75 linebacker and No. 744 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Consensus.

Hewlett has an On3 NIL Valuation of $15K with 3,600 combined followers on Instagram and Twitter. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

Michigan now has 19 commits in its 2023 recruiting class — On300 offensive lineman Nathan Efobi, On300 offensive tackle Evan Link, On300 EDGE Enow Etta, consensus four-star offensive lineman Amir Herring, four-star EDGE Collins Acheampong, four-star running back Cole Cabana, four-star linebacker Semaj Bridgeman, four-star tight end Deakon Tonielli, three-star wide receivers Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore, three-star defensive lineman Brooks Bahr, three-star running back Benjamin Hall, three-star EDGE Aymeric Koumba, three-star tight end Zack Marshall, three-star athlete Breeon Ishmail, three-star athletes Kendrick Bell and Jason Hewlett, three-star cornerback Cameron Calhoun and three-star kicker Adam Samaha.
