Michigan Wolverines basketball beat out Big Ten rival Michigan State for the top 2024 in-state prospect, Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central three-star point guard Durral Brooks. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder is the No. 117 overall player and 19th-best point guard in the nation, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He also held offers from several mid-major progams.

In the video below, we break down Brooks’ pledge — how it happened, what it means and what he brings to the Maize and Blue.

Brooks is an athletic guard who loves to run in transition and play strong, on-ball defense. He rebounds well for a guard, too. His three-point shot is his biggest area of focus this offseason. He hasn’t shot threes at a high volume during his career in high school and on the Nike EYBL circuit, but he did improve his percentage from 30 to 37 percent from his sophomore to junior year.

Brooks earned Division II first-team All-State honors from the Associated Press as a junior last season. His team was bounced in the first round of regionals, however, after making the state final the year before and winning the program’s first-ever state championship his freshman season. Brooks nearly had a triple-double in the championship game win.

Michigan assistant Saddi Washington led the way in Brooks’ recruitment, and head coach Juwan Howard, of course, had a big role too. Both connected well with his family, including his nine-year-old brother, which was ultimately the difference. Plus, while Brooks appreciated his MSU offer, he grew up a fan of the Maize and Blue, which didn’t hurt the cause either.

Michigan now has two commitments in the class of 2024, both guards. Brooks joins three-star point guard Christian Anderson, previously of Atlanta Lovett, who is set to transfer to Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy next academic year.
