Most of Mississippi State’s work in the spring transfer portal has been in the trenches and that trend continued on Thursday. Former Charlotte transfer defensive lineman Colin Coates signed with Mississippi State, per On3 reports.

Coates has three years left to play two and in the past two seasons, he totaled 27 tackles, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Coates is also the first defensive addition for the Bulldogs in the spring transfer portal.

Coates officially visited Mississippi State earlier this week and also officially visited Toledo and Southern Miss.

“The visit went great and I loved it,” Coats told Maroon and White Daily earlier this week. “They have a great routine, a great culture and a great staff. I could definitely see myself being a part of it.”

The majority of Coates’ visit centered around meeting the head coach Jeff Lebby and the Bulldogs’ staff. That and enjoying the local food scene in Starkville.

During his talks with the staff, Coates said the message was simple and straight to the point.

“The coaches were telling me I can come in and play a lot,” Coates explained. “They let me know I can come in and help them turn the program around. That was pretty much the most of it.”

Coates will now enroll at Mississippi State in June and begin summer classes and summer workouts with his new Bulldog teammates.

“I’m glad I got it over with and now I can prepare for the next step,” Coates mentioned. “I wanted to look at the family culture and I am a big family-oriented guy. It’s also about the culture and the people surrounding the program. That’s a big thing for me.”

Thus far in the spring portal, Mississippi State has also added tight ends Sam West (Indiana) and Max Reese (Eastern Michigan) along with offensive linemen Jaekwon Bouldin (Purdue), Zechariah Owens (Colorado), Brennan Smith (UTEP), Jayvin James (Maryland) andd Blake Steen (Virginia).
