Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we start our look at the Bulldog roster and the added depth on the defensive line.

99 Days: No. 99, Junior DT Jamarcus “Diesel” Moye

One of the biggest points of emphasis for the Bulldogs in the offseason was improving a defensive line that was one of the worst in recent memory. While it remains to be seen if that happened, the Bulldogs added bigger bodies and depth at all the positions on the line.

Moye is a player that State is looking to give them some reps off the bench. There’s no doubt that he’s a big body in the middle at 6’5, 345 pounds, and his nickname of Diesel has already made him a bit of a cult hero on the Maroon and White Daily message boards.

A native of Phenix City, Ala., Moye played his high school ball at Smiths Station High School. Moye was an under-the-radar prospect coming out of high school because there wasn’t much film on him. He only played in eight games, but it was enough to draw some attention from the junior college circuit.

Tyler Junior College in Texas would grab him and he would play in five games his first year with 2.0 sacks in those games. Despite dealing with an illness last year that kept him out of several games, Moye made 19 stops in eight games with 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sack and a forced fumble.

Many Group of 5 schools saw the potential with Moye as he picked up offers from UNLV, Texas State, UTSA, UAB, Western Kentucky and others. David Turner was looking to add some depth to his nose tackle position, and he discovered Moye during the season while scouting at Tyler. After visiting shortly following the season, Moye would pick the Bulldogs.

Moye enrolled in Starkville early and got a jumpstart on his SEC career. It was a productive spring for him as he battled for reps up front and gave the Bulldogs some good action in the Maroon and White spring game. It’s not likely that he’s battling for a starting spot, but Moye could come in and plug the hole during games this fall.
