Inside NC State's second-highest rated offensive line signing class under coach Dave Doeren
As NC State coach Dave Doeren went through each of the 17 signees that made their verbal commitments official Wednesday afternoon, one player seemed to bring a different energy to his analysis: Louisville (Ky.) Male four-star center Isaac Sowells Jr. “Probably one of the best centers that we’ve been able to sign since I’ve been here,” Doeren began. “A lot of the centers that we’ve recruited over the years, we’ve had to train how to play that position. … Really excited. I wish he was here today to start working with him.” It was a rave review for the 6-foot-1.5, 290-pound center, but Sowells was one of NC State’s biggest recruiting wins on the trail. He was being courted by several SEC programs, including Kentucky, but NC State was able to emerge with Sowell’s services. While Sowell’s commitment — and signature on National Signing Day — signaled a win for the future of NC State’s offensive line, he wasn’t the only recruit the Pack viewed as the future of its front. Offensive line coach Garett Tujague helped sign three others, including Nashville (Tenn.) Antioch four-star tackle Tahkyian Whitset, Wilmington (N.C.) Hoggard three-star tackle Michael Gibbs and Kings Mills (Ohio) three-star guard Kage Payne. The Pack’s haul marked the second straight offensive line signing group with a pair of four-star recruits and it was the second-highest class for the position group that Doeren has signed over the past 12 seasons, just behind last year’s signees.
