For the second time this year, NC State director of athletics Boo Corrigan is dealing with a shocking cancellation due to COVID-19.

After seeing the Wolfpack baseball team controversially kicked out of the College World Series in Omaha in June, Corrigan was in San Diego when he was informed that the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl contest for NC State football against UCLA was off due to COVID-19 protocols in the Bruins’ program.

“It’s shocking,” Corrigan said. “We’re less than three hours away from getting ready to get on the bus to go and play a game. It’s not 24 hours or 48 hours or any of those things.

“I’ve been looking at my watch all week, trying to figure out what time is it, how close are we? Then you get that phone call.

“It’s hard not to be angry. It’s not angry at anyone in particular, but you’re angry about the situation because you know how hard everyone in our program has fought to get to this point, what they’ve given up during the process to get here.

“Yeah, it’s an emotional time.”

Corrigan also called it a “failure” that players discovered on Twitter that there would be no game before NC State officials could address the team.

“That’s part of the whole process of being angry about how everything went down,” Corrigan explained.

He also noted that his conversation with his counterpart at UCLA, Martin Jarmond, was “frustrating.”

“I think with the timing of everything, it has a lot to do with the frustration from my standpoint. … We’re three hours away from getting on the bus to go over there,” Corrigan reiterated.

Corrigan’s message to the NC State football team was simple: don’t forget about everything that was accomplished during a 9-3 regular season that ended with a No. 18 ranking in all the major polls.

“It’s a really unfortunate situation,” he added.

The NC State football program was looking for its second-ever double-digit win season, and Corrigan’s task has shifted to finding out if there was any available avenue to play another game against another opponent.

A conversation with East Carolina director of athletics Jon Gilbert ended without any possibility of a matchup with the Pirates, who had their Military Bowl vs. Boston College canceled.

Corrigan said Wolfpack athletics is doing everything it can to find options for the NC State football team, but he also acknowledged logistical obstacles and hurdles.

“There’s a very limited window,” he added.
