NC State baseball pitchers found out what some of its ACC rivals discovered before them: Virginia Tech’s lineup is for real.

On a cold weekend in Blacksburg, Va., which included wintry precipitation that briefly delayed Saturday’s game, NC State lost two of three to the Hokies.

A three-run third and 11-run seventh set up Virginia Tech for a football-like score 21-10 over NC State in game one. The Hokies then clinched the series with an 8-2 victory on Saturday.

NC State was able to salvage the series finale, slugging its way past Virginia Tech, 10-3.

NC State is 19-11 overall and 7-7 in the ACC. Virginia Tech is 20-8 and 7-6.

At The Plate For NC State Baseball

Corner outfielders sophomores Noah Soles and Dominic Pilolli both hit well over the weekend, with each hitting safely in all three games.

Soles went 6 of 12 at the plate for the series with a double, two runs and three runs batted in. Pilolli hit for the cycle over the weekend. He was 6 of 10 overall with a double, a triple and a homer and scored two runs while driving in four.

Also hitting safely in all three games was sophomore first baseman LuJames Groover III, who was 5 of 10 at the plate and added six walks. He also had a triple and a stolen base while scoring three times.

And freshman designated hitter Tommy White made history, tying the school record for homers by a freshman with 13 on this monster blast Sunday.

On The Mound

NC State baseball has had to change its weekend rotation frequently this year, and making his debut as a starter this season was super senior lefty Canaan Silver, and Silver excelled.

In game three, Silver tossed six efficient innings, allowing only two hits and an earned run while walking one and striking out five. Silver threw just 78 pitches to get through six innings.

Silver has been a star for NC State on the mount this year, accounting for a 1.91 earned run average over 33.0 innings.

Silver made the start in the rotation in place of sophomore righthander Sam Highfill, who did not pitch this weekend.
