Offensive tackle Obadiah Obasuyi from Alpharetta (Ga.) High went into his official visit to NC State on a fact-finding mission. After two nights in Raleigh, he returned home blown away by what he discovered.

So much so that Obasuyi decided he was done with the recruiting process. He made a verbal commitment to the Wolfpack Sunday evening June 12. The 6-foot-6, 290-pounder had previously lined up an official visit to Duke next week and also had offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Mississippi State and UCF, among others.

What pushed NC State over the top for Obasuyi was a visit that went beyond his wildest expectations.

“A lot of coaches didn’t know about me, but once I came onto the scene, I came onto the scene quick,” Obasuyi said. “I got 18 offers in almost five weeks. I just want to find the right school. On this visit, I was just trying to see if NC State was who they were advertising themselves to be.

“All the coaches that recruit, they are basically like car salesmen. It’s their job, but for the player this is the most important decision of my life. … When I am doing these visits, I am thinking, ‘Is this the place I want to go?’ Every single place I went on this visit, it was perfect to my standards. When I was trying to find out if there was anything wrong with this place, I couldn’t.”

Obasuyi noted that he is the type of prospect that is going to ask questions while on his visits, trying to find out as much information as possible.

“I would ask a question and have an answer in my head that this is what I would want the answer to be. They would say that answer. It was crazy,” Obasuyi recalled.

Coaches Made Big Impression On Obadiah Obasuyi

The two main people that Obasuyi wanted to get to know on his visit was NC State offensive line coach John Garrison and Wolfpack strength and conditioning coordinator Dantonio “Thunder” Burnette.

Obasuyi made a visit to Raleigh in May and has had a chance to get to know Garrison well.

“I had a little bit of a good feel for him,” Obasuyi added. “Since I have been up there on a visit, I had a better feel. He’s the most genuine person you’d meet.”

Burnette similarly made a huge impression on Obasuyi.

“He immediately was straightforward,” Obasuyi said. “He was like, ‘This is what we do, this is how we want to do it, and this is what we want to do with you.’ He had a plan for me. He had an individual plan for my body and my size, and it wasn’t an overview he gives to every big guy or every tall guy.”

The last person Obasuyi spoke with was NC State head coach Dave Doeren. Obasuyi described the conversation as short and sweet.

“It was not a long talk, but it was quality,” he noted. “He’s so blunt. He’s going to tell you where he stands. I love that. He’s not one for fluff.”

In the end, Obasuyi decided to join a program he is convinced is about to become a force in the ACC.

“NC State is not just an up-and-coming school,” he said. “People are realizing who they are.”

Obasuyi is the fifth member of the NC State football recruiting class of 2023 and the third offensive lineman.
