It’s been a busy offseason for Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg as he and his staff try to push the Huskers to the next step in Year Five in Lincoln.

On Wednesday night, Hoiberg gave a flurry of updates on his program during his monthly radio show on the Huskers Radio Network.

Here is a full rundown of what he had to say…

Tominaga continuing with pre-draft process, decision coming soon

Hoiberg said Keisei Tominaga was still going through the NBA pre-draft process and had at least a couple of upcoming workouts scheduled.

The NCAA’s early entry withdrawal deadline is midnight on June 1. Hoiberg said he would sit down and have a thorough Zoom meeting with Tominaga and his parents toward the end of the month.

While Tominaga still weighs his decision, he has apparently made significant gains with his strength and weight this offseason. Hoiberg said NU created new personalized workout and nutrition plans for the senior guard, and he’d already added noticeable bulk.

“You’re not going to recognize Keisei right now,” Hoiberg said. “He looks great.”

Gary remains on track with shoulder recovery

Hoiberg said forward Juwan Gary was “right on track” with his recovery from season-ending shoulder surgery last winter. Nebraska’s medical team recently cleared Gary for more work in his rehab, and he’s been shooting a lot over the past couple of weeks.

In particular, Hoiberg said Gary had been doing “one arm shooting” and was focusing on the fundamentals of his shot. Last season, Hoiberg said Gary was shifting about 75 percent of his weight to his left side, which made for an inconsistent release.

By improving his technique and balance, Hoiberg thinks Gary’s injury could end up being “a blessing in disguise.”

Nebraska’s search continues to fill remaining scholarships

One of the biggest questions left to answer this offseason is what Nebraska will do with its two remaining scholarships for the 2023-24 season.

Hoiberg obviously couldn’t get into any specifics but said the Huskers had been in contact with many potential transfer targets. That included some recent Zoom meetings with available players.

However, NU would be selective with how they filled those scholarships. Hoiberg said he and his staff wanted to continue their strategy of finding the best fits for their program and not just the most talented players.

Hoiberg added that players were still “testing the waters” for the NBA Draft that could enter the portal if they decided to return to school. While the portal deadline was last week, that doesn’t apply to graduate transfers who could also be late transfer additions.

The dead period for college basketball starts Thursday and runs through May 26.
