Nebraska has picked up their 14th commitment from Lincoln (Neb.) East wide receiver Malachi Coleman. Coleman had the Huskers in his top seven going back to this summer and chose the Huskers earlier today during a Lincoln East High School ceremony. Coleman is a four-star athlete and is the No. 1 rated player in the state of Nebraska.

Here are some quick thoughts and takes on Malachi Coleman’s commitment and what it means for Nebraska:

1. The first point that needs to be mentioned is that Coleman is the first commitment to Nebraska since Scott Frost was let go and Mickey Joseph became the head coach. Mickey Joseph took over recruiting Coleman in January and immediately improved Nebraska’s position with Coleman.

2. Nebraska is getting a long, receiving target with excellent athletic tools. What kind of tools? How about 4.4/40, 10.46/100m, 21.31/200m, and a 41’ vertical jump? On top of being a standout on the football field and the track, he also played basketball for East.

3. What everyone saw with Coleman beyond the measurables and the testing numbers was his potential. At 6-foot-5 and around 205-pounds, Coleman has good size. However, he needs to add even more to his frame. He has plenty of real estate to do so. Several teams saw Coleman as an Edge or a defensive end at the next level despite his incredible abilities at wide receiver.

4. Coleman is the first commitment from Lincoln East since Chris Walker signed with Nebraska in the class of 2017. There have been several other players going back to 2005 that have signed with a four-year school from East. However, this will be the first year since 2005 that East will have two. Quarterback Noah Walters is committed to North Alabama.

5. Nebraska wins out for Coleman out of a top-seven group which will make Husker fans smile. Coleman was considering Ole Miss, Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgia, Oregon, USC, and Nebraska.

6. Despite naming a top seven, Coleman only took one official visit to Nebraska in June. Coleman had several other official visits planned to schools such as Michigan, USC, Ole Miss, and Miami. Despite scheduling other visits Coleman didn’t take either the Michigan or USC visit without much explanation. Coleman explained on social media that both Ole Miss and Miami canceled the trip.

7. Coleman has been chosen to participate in the 2023 All-American Bowl on NBC. Wynden Ho’ohuli is the last Nebraska recruit to play in The All-American Bowl in 2021. Josh Banderas is the last player from Nebraska to play in The All-American Bowl in 2013 (U.S. Army sponsored the game before changing to its current format).
