The Nebraska baseball team’s fall season got off to a hot start as the Huskers trounced Omaha 9-1 in a 14-inning game.

The Big Red saw 18 new faces make an appearance after a summer full of movement, and many of the newcomers contributed to NU’s success.

Nebraska started the game by introducing five newcomers into the starting lineup. However, it was the returners that got the Huskers out to an early lead. Josh Caron’s base hit drove in the first run of the game for the Big Red, and that lead never faltered.

Max Anderson drove in two more runs in the third inning, and NU were flying. As Nebraska held strong defensively, Cayden Brumbaugh added another run in the fifth, and Max Anderson drove in the Huskers’ sixth run in the eighth inning.

Slow and steady was the name of the game offensively as the Big Red as Efry Cervantes drove in two more in the 11th inning with a two-run blast that clattered off the right field foul pole. NU’s final run came from Blake Mozley as he drove it in with a base hit.

The bats were hot for Nebraska in this game, but defensively, the Huskers shined. The only Maverick run came off a solo shot from Eddie Satisky in the fifth inning, and following that, the Big Red held strong.

With over 20 newcomers on the roster for NU, the team played like they had been together for years as they rolled past Omaha.

To basically have one mistake, one miscue in 14 innings, that’s something to build on.

Strong Outings from the pitching staff

Through 14 innings, the nine pitchers in this game gave up a combined 10 hits, and just one run. Along with that, they struck out 13 Maverick batters, while walking just six.

Emmett Olson started for Nebraska and allowed just one hit in his two innings pitched. The Huskers also saw strong performances out of the newcomers Jace Kaminska, and Will Walsh. Kaminska pitched two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four, while Walsh closed for NU and didn’t allow a single hit, striking out one of the three batters he faced. Eight Big Red pitchers took the mound today, and only Chandler Benson allowed more than one hit.

The veterans led by example

Nebraska saw Max Anderson and Efry Cervantes lead the team in RBI’s, with three from Anderson, and two coming off Cervantes’ two-run homer.

This Husker team has welcomed dozens of new faces, but the returning players stepped up in this game, and that leadership shined through.
