Nebraska wide receiver Trey Palmer selected by Tampa Bay in NFL Draft
Nebraska had its second player come off the board during the third day of the 2023 NFL Draft on Friday night.
Trey Palmer, who re-wrote the school record books during his lone season as a Husker last year, was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 191st overall pick in the sixth round. He joins EDGE Ochaun Mathis, who was taken two picks earlier by the Los Angeles Rams at No. 189.
The Buccaneers traded a 2024 fifth-round pick with the Philadelphia Eagles to move up five spots to get Palmer.
Palmer becomes the highest NU receiver drafted since Kenny Bell was the 162nd overall selection in the fifth round in 2015. Former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Eric Crouch was a third-round pick as a receiver in 2002.
Palmer is the second Husker wideout to be picked over the past two drafts, following Samori Toure (Green Bay Packers, seventh round) last year.
Tampa Bay’s general manager is Jason Licht, a 52-year-old Fremont native who played lineman for both Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan.

Palmer made the most of his lone season as a Husker
The former LSU transfer set a single-season NU record with 1,043 yards receiving, topping the old mark of 1,004 yards held by Stanley Morgan Jr. in 2018. Palmer was the only player in the Big Ten Conference with three 150-yard receiving games this season.
Palmer finished the season with 71 receptions, ranking second all-time behind Marlon Lucky’s mark of 75 from 2007. His nine receiving touchdowns are good for fifth all-time in school history.
The Kentwood, Louisiana, native put himself further on the draft radar with an impressive performance at the NFL Combine. He posted the fastest 40-yard dash time of any wide receiver at the event with a blazing time of 4.33. That was the fourth-fastest time of any player at the Combine.
Still, Palmer still was unsatisfied with his 40 time.
“No, I was mad at it, really,” Palmer said during Nebraska’s Pro Day last month. “I wanted a 4.2.”
