Nebraska wide receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Tuesday is the final day Husker players are allowed to enter, which falls in the 30 days from Sept. 12 to Oct. 11 proceeding the firing of former head coach Scott Frost.

After Oct. 11, all NU players must wait until Dec. 5 to officially enter the transfer portal.

Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda started fast but disappeared

In Nebraska’s 31-28 loss to Northwestern in Ireland, Garcia-Castaneda was one of the game’s stars.

The New Mexico State transfer led the Huskers with four catches for 120 yards and a touchdown on seven targetted throws. After his strong showing in Dublin, Garcia-Castaneda had a combined one catch for zero yards against North Dakota, Georgia Southern and Oklahoma on three targets.

“(Garcia-Castaneda) wasn’t happy,” head coach Mickey Joseph said on Tuesday. “He wanted to be the No. 1 guy. We couldn’t do that for him.”

One number that hurt Garcia-Castaneda’s playing time is he is currently responsible for two of NU’s five fumbles by this season by either a running back or a wide receiver. He also was charged with one drop. His fumble vs. Northwestern was controversial, but the call on the field stood, and it changed the game’s complexion.

The two fumbles and dropped passed ultimately took away some of his playing time, as he fell behind Alante Brown on the depth chart.

Garcia-Castaneda played 34 snaps vs. Northwestern and then saw his snap count fall to 23, 24 and 25 over the next three games. He also reportedly battled an injury over the last few weeks.

Before coming to Nebraska, Garcia-Castaneda led New Mexico State with 37 catches for 578 yards and four touchdowns. He never used his redshirt at either NMSU or Saddleback College in California.

By entering the portal now, he can redshirt for the 2022 season and still have two years of eligibility remaining. Garcia-Castaneda is the first Husker player to enter the transfer portal since running back Markese Stepp went in on July 12.
