There could potentially be at least one former Husker on Nebraska’s coaching staff.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, former Husker walk-on Jake Peetz (2003-2005) is expected to Matt Rhule in Lincoln. However, HuskerOnline has learned the deal with Peetz is not done and could be contingent on whether Mickey Joseph is part of the full-time staff.

The O’Neill native worked for Rhule at Carolina in 2019 and 2020 — first as running backs coach and then as quarterbacks coach — before taking the offensive coordinator job at LSU in 2021. The Tigers fired Ed Orgeron after that season, and Peetz is currently working as an offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams.

Peetz made $1.2 million at LSU in 2021 and was set to make $1.3 million from the Tigers in 2022 before the staff was fired.

He will potentially be a part of an offensive staff that includes South Carolina offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield and UConn running backs coach E.J. Barthel.

Jake Peetz’s rise in coaching has been impressive

What’s impressive about Peetz is how he’s climbed the coaching ranks. When his walk-on career ended as a backup long snapper for Bill Callahan in 2005, Peetz immediately took analyst and scouting jobs with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, UCLA and Alabama. His first coaching position was at Santa Barbara City College in 2006.

Peetz’s real break came in 2015 when Oakland Raiders head coach Jake Del Rio hired him as a full-time offensive assistant. Peetz coached Derek Carr that season, who eventually played in the Pro Bowl.

He was with the Raiders from 2015-2017 and then took an analyst job under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2018. After that, Peetz was hired by Rhule at Carolina, serving as his running backs coach in 2019 and quarterbacks coach in 2020.

Peetz left the Panthers in 2021 to take the LSU offensive coordinator job before moving into his current job under Sean McVay with the Rams.

He brings a unique background if he indeed joins Rhule staff, having worked under Saban, McVay, Rhule, Orgeron and Del Rio, among others.

A big question remains what Peetz’s title would be, and could he possibly carry a coordinator title with Satterfield?
