After Chad Bowden left Notre Dame to become USC’s new general manager, the Irish’s search to replace him focused in on Texas Tech’s James Blanchard.

Blanchard turned down the Irish’s pursuit and signed a long-term deal to stay in Lubbock. Notre Dame found its Bowden replacement in the NFL, luring Mike Martin away from the Detroit Lions.

On the Next Up with Adam Breneman podcast, Blanchard discussed turning away the job at Notre Dame and staying at Texas Tech.

“It’s because of the people in Lubbock and the community … Turning down Notre Dame was hard,” he said. “You walk in there and see Marcus Freeman — that guy is a rock star. He has a glow about him when he walks into the room. You can tell why he’s so successful.

“But we had unfinished business here… Man, I came here to do something that hadn’t been done at this program before — we’ve never even been to the Big 12 Championship. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep at night if we didn’t accomplish that mission with Coach McGuire … That was big for me and our coaching staff.”

Quote of the day

“It was pretty fun. I got to connect with some of the other receivers, compete against the O-line, D-line, and the rest of the other positions. Just chill with everybody and enjoy the rest of the environment. Soak it all in.”
