Notre Dame has jumped into the mix for the latest Division I basketball recruit from its backyard. The Irish offered 2023 Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn point guard Markus Burton Tuesday, one day after he completed a visit to campus.

It’s the first high-major offer for Burton, who Notre Dame closely watched this summer during the four live evaluation periods. He impressed the Irish staff in a pair of June tournaments playing for Penn. He spent July playing AAU for Mac Irvin Fire on the Nike EYBL circuit.

Burton averaged 27.2 points, 5.6 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 3.6. steals per game as a junior last season. He set a Penn record for single-season points (734). In March, Purdue Fort Wayne became the first Division I program to offer him. He has added 10 other offers since then, including Missouri State, Western Michigan, Drake, Appalachian State, Miami Ohio and Illinois-Chicago.

If Notre Dame lands Burton, it would mark the third time a local basketball recruit has committed to the Irish in the past three cycles. They landed guard Blake Wesley from South Bend’s Riley High School and wing JR Konieczny from South Bend St. Joseph in the 2021 class. Wesley became the program’s first-ever one-and-done draft pick when the San Antonio Spurs selected him 25th overall in June.

Notre Dame also pulled five-star guard and New York native J.J. Starling from nearby prep basketball power La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere, located about 35 minutes from campus. Starling was the highest-ranked recruit in the Irish’s 2022 class, which finished No. 12 nationally.

Burton does not have an On3 Consensus or On3 Top 150 rating.
