Two former Notre Dame players will debut in the XFL this weekend when the league kicks off its second season since its 2020 relaunch. They will also be teammates.

Quarterback Jack Coan (2021) and tight end Alizé Mack (2015-18) are on the San Antonio Brahmas roster and will be in action Sunday against the St. Louis Battlehawks (3 p.m. ET, ABC). Coan is the team’s starting quarterback and was assigned to San Antonio after the XFL Draft in November. The Brahmas drafted Mack.

Both players spent last summer in an NFL team’s training camp. Coan signed with the Indianapolis Colts in May 2022 as an undrafted free agent, but was waived Aug. 30 during final cuts. He did not latch on with another NFL team. Mack, a 2019 seventh-round pick of the New Orleans Saints, spent the offseason and training camp with the Green Bay Packers, but was waived in September. He has not appeared in a regular season game or made a 53-man roster since he was drafted.

Coan was Notre Dame’s starting quarterback in 2021, his lone season with the team after transferring from Wisconsin. He threw for 3,150 yards, 25 touchdowns and 7 interceptions that season. Mack caught 68 passes for 716 yards and 4 touchdowns from 2015-18. He did not play in 2016 due to an academic issue.

The 2023 XFL season runs through April 23. Each team is scheduled to play 10 regular season games. The playoffs are April 29 through May 13. This year is the XFL’s first attempt at games since 2020, when COVID-19 forced the cancellation of its remaining schedule five weeks into the season. The league suspended operations and filed for bankruptcy about a month later.
