The hire of Micah Shrewsberry as Notre Dame men’s basketball coach is official. The school announced the move Friday, two days after the sides agreed in principle to a seven-year contract reportedly worth around $4 million per year.

Shrewsberry will be introduced at a press conference March 30 at a time to be determined. It will be live streamed on the Notre Dame athletics YouTube page.

“During our two-month process, we weekly reviewed our candidate pool and each week he (Micah) stayed at the top of our list due to his fit at the University and his commitment to the student-athlete experience. Not only do his personal & family values align with the University, but his dedication to the development of each member of his program as well.”

Shrewsberry, 46, was Penn State’s head coach from 2021-23. The Nittany Lions went 23-14 this season and reached their first NCAA Tournament since 2011. They were a No. 10 seed and beat No. 7 seed Texas A&M 76-59 in the first round before losing to No. 2 Texas in the second. They also reached the Big Ten Tournament championship game. They set the Big Ten single-season record for 3-pointers, with 385.

This season put Penn State on the national radar. It also launched Shrewsberry to the forefront of coaching carousel speculation. Notre Dame identified him as a top candidate immediately after the Jan. 19 announcement that 23-year head coach Mike Brey would step aside at the end of the season. Shrewsberry, eventually, identified Notre Dame as a desirable next stop.

“The combination of top-notch academics, plus a long, storied history of success on the basketball court, made this a very attractive job for me,” Shrewsberry said. “The power of the Notre Dame brand, and the passionate alumni family, will allow us to recruit the brightest student-athletes from coast to coast.”

All told, Shrewsberry was 37-31 in two seasons at Penn State.

The Notre Dame job meant a return to Indiana, where he grew up and spent most of his coaching career. He was an assistant at Purdue from 2019-21 before taking the Penn State job and had a prior stint with the Boilermakers from 2011-13. He was a Butler assistant from 2007-11 under Brad Stevens. His only prior head-coaching job was at IU-South Bend from 2005-07.

Shrewsberry was an assistant with the Boston Celtics from 2013-19, also under Stevens. He began his coaching career with assistant stops at two Division III Indiana schools, Wabash (1999-2001) and DePauw (2001-03).
