New Notre Dame baseball head coach Shawn Stiffler is going hard on the local recruiting trail. The Fighting Irish received a commitment from a second local product in as many days Wednesday.

Tuesday, South Bend (Ind.) St. Joseph outfielder Jayce Lee announced his commitment to the Irish. Wednesday, it was Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn third baseman/right-handed pitcher RJ Cromartie‘s turn. Both prospects are 2024 recruits, bringing the Irish’s pledge count in that class to five players.

“I would like to thank my parents, coaches, and friends who have all helped to support me throughout this journey,” Cromartie wrote in a tweet. “With that being said, I am blessed to announce my commitment to The University of Notre Dame.”

Stiffler was hired to replace former Irish coach Link Jarrett last month. Four players from the 2022 roster were selected in last month’s MLB Draft. The Irish’s top class of 2022 prospect, Owen Murphy, also went off the board and signed with the Atlanta Braves. The Irish will welcome eight true freshman and a handful of transfers to combat the losses, though.

“There’s a sense of security when you have a top quarterback going there. I talked to CJ, and he’s a really good kid and good player too. It definitely makes a difference when you’re choosing a school and they already have a great quarterback committed.”
