Notre Dame’s top-ranked signee is officially a part of an MLB organization. Owen Murphy signed with the Atlanta Braves over the weekend.

The Braves selected Murphy with the No. 20 overall pick in the first round of the MLB Draft last Sunday. Any hope of getting the No. 25 overall class of 2022 high school prospect and No. 3 third baseman according to Perfect Game on campus went away with how soon Murphy went off the draft board.

According to MLB.com writer Jim Callis, Murphy signed for $2,556,900. His No. 20 overall selection carried a slot value of $3,409,200. Would-be senior Jack Brannigan, picked in the third round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, also signed his professional contract over the weekend.

All four Irish players who were drafted (Brannigan and pitchers Liam Simon, Alex Rao and John Michael Bertrand) are leaving South Bend and starting their careers at the next level. Fellow pitcher Austin Temple is expected to ink a free agent deal with the Houston Astros. Murphy was the only Irish signee who was drafted, meanwhile. The rest of the class will arrive on campus for new head coach Shawn Stiffler this fall.

The Irish’s newest football commit, Austin Westlake wide receiver Jaden Greathouse, can play a little basketball, too.
