A former Notre Dame pitcher who carved out a career in the MLB that lasted longer than a decade is hanging it up. Pitcher David Phelps announced his retirement from professional baseball on Wednesday.

The right-handed Phelps became the first Irish pitcher to post 100-plus strikeouts (102) and an earned run average (ERA) under 2.00 (1.88) in the same season as a sophomore in South Bend in 2007. His immaculate second year of college ball earned him First Team All-Big East honors.

Phelps was selected in the 14th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. He made his big-league debut in 2012 after working his way through the minors for four years. Phelps started 67 of the 367 MLB games he appeared in from 2012-22.

Phelps’ two longest stints were with the Yankees and Miami Marlins. He toed the rubber in 87 games for the former and 131 for the latter. When all was said and done, Phelps put down a record of 34-40 with a highly-respectable ERA of 3.80. He had 666 strikeouts against 273 walks with a WHIP (walk plus hits per innings pitched) of 1.315.

Phelps’ agent released a lengthy, sentimental goodbye to the game on social media.
