Report: Notre Dame baseball set to hire VCU's Seth Cutler-Voltz as next pitching coach
Less than a week into the job, Notre Dame head baseball coach Shawn Stiffler is beginning to get settled and build his staff. On Monday, Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball reported Stiffler is set to bring VCU pitching coach Seth Cutler-Voltz to Notre Dame. He will replace 12-year coach Chuck Ristano, who followed former Irish skipper Link Jarrett to Florida State.
Last season was Cutler-Voltz’s first as the pitching coach for the Rams, and he led his pitching staff to a 3.91 team ERA, which ranked No. 9 nationally. Ironically, Notre Dame had the same team ERA. The VCU pitchers posted a 1.29 WHIP, struck out 518 batters and walked 191. Opponents hit .244 against them. His ace was lefty Campbell Ellis, who had a 1.72 ERA in conference play and a 3.27 mark on the season in 21 starts.
VCU pulled Cutler-Voltz away from Wofford last year after he spent five seasons coaching the Terriers. He was also at UT Martin from 2015-16.

Cutler-Voltz spent four years as a standout pitcher for the Rams from 2009-12, starting 73 games and posting an 18-17 record and career ERA of 4.31. The Richmond, Va., native struck out 229 batters while at VCU. He was a Rams volunteer assistant for two seasons after graduating.
“Any time we get one of our own to return to Ram Nation, it is a very special day,” Stiffler said when VCU hired Cutler-Voltz in November 2021, per a university press release. “Seth was a tremendous player who has always had a special feel for the game. His passion for this city and love for VCU will translate throughout our team. Seth has been a winner everywhere he has been. Over the last several years, he has established himself as one of the best pitching minds in the country as well as a premier recruiter.”

Stiffler is still searching for a new hitting coach. Former Irish hitting coach Rich Wallace followed Jarrett and Ristano, and Stiffler’s hitting coach at VCU, Rich Witten, is now the head coach at FIU.
