Notre Dame will get one defensive starter back for Saturday’s game vs. Boston College. Another is likely out for the second straight week.

Senior safety Brandon Joseph is “doubtful” to play this week due to an ankle sprain, head coach Marcus Freeman said. The injury sidelined him for last week’s win over Navy and part of the win over Clemson Nov. 5.

Freeman said senior linebacker JD Bertrand, who missed the Navy game with a groin injury, will return to action and is “100 percent a go.” He said Monday he expected Bertrand to play this week after Bertrand returned to practice Sunday. Bertrand was ruled out about an hour before kickoff vs. Navy after going through initial warmups. Additionally, senior linebacker Jack Kiser is probable after injuring his ankle in the Navy game.

Bertrand has 60 tackles – 15 more than the next Notre Dame defensive player – 6.5 tackles for loss and 2 pass breakups. Joseph has 27 tackles, 1 interception, 1 pass breakup and 1 forced fumble.

Quote of the Day

“To this day he’s not 100 percent. He has been injured all season. He just goes out there, he practices and he plays. He could easily be the guy who says, ‘You know, I’m not going to play, I’m going to wait until the NFL and save my body.’ He doesn’t. He sacrifices his body for this university and this football program.”
