Newsstand: Reporter names Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman candidate for NFL job

Another successful Notre Dame football season means its head coach will be suggested to fill the vacancies of teams elsewhere.
On Wednesday, the New York Giants became the latest team to reportedly have interest in Marcus Freeman. Sports Illustrated senior reporter Albert Breer named Freeman a potential Giants candidate in an interview on The Rich Eisen Show.
“I think Marcus Freeman could be somebody that would be of interest to them,” Breer said. “Because there are Notre Dame connections in that building, and Marcus has the kind of presence they would look for.”
On June 6, Giants general manager Joe Schoen is familiar with Freeman. Schoen was in South Bend with his son, 2028 class quarterback Carson Schoen, for Irish Invasion. Joe also attended Notre Dame’s game vs. Miami on Aug. 31.
Last November, Freeman was reportedly a candidate for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching position. He addressed those rumors on Nov. 21.
“Do I ever want to coach in the NFL? I have no clue,” Freeman said. “I don’t even know what that entails really right now because I’ve never done it. But I’m just focused on staying here in the present.”

As long as Freeman continues to have success with the Irish, he will routinely be a candidate for NFL and premier college football openings. Still, until he takes an interview elsewhere, all he would be is a candidate.

Notre Dame Quote of the Day
“I feel like it’s necessary, I do. A lot of times in things I say to the team, it may come out in terms of, a great example, is, ‘What’s the noise you’re putting in your head?’ Just because the noise in somebody else’s head is one thing, doesn’t mean it has to be your noise.
“And so, as I told them, I’m sure I’ve said before, like just because somebody else might be saying my name’s up for whatever job or being considered, that isn’t the noise that I’m going to put in my head or I need, that ain’t my noise.”
