Newsstand: Former Notre Dame OT Joe Alt receives devastating injury news
Former Notre Dame and current star Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Joe Alt suffered an ankle injury in Sunday’s game and is out for the season.
It’s brutal news for the 2024 first-round NFL Draft pick. Alt’s pass-blocking grade of 82.3 ranks seventh among tackles with at least 300 snaps, while his overall grade of 79.0 ranks ninth in that same group, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Alt missed three games from Oct. 5 to Oct. 19 because of an ankle injury, and his latest setback is to that same ankle.
“Feel bad for Joe,” Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said. “I know it’s going to be OK. It’s not going to be life-altering. Feel bad for him.”

Alt started 33 games for the Irish, becoming a fixture on Notre Dame’s offensive line as early as Week 6 of his freshman year. As a junior, he was a unanimous first-team All-American, allowing only five quarterback pressures all season.
He started 16 games for the Chargers as a rookie in 2024.
Notre Dame tweets of the day
Quote of the day
“Yeah, he’s doing his job. And when you do your job and the ball comes your way, now you’re in a position to make a play. I mean, you’ve seen him make some big-time interceptions, game-winning interceptions the past couple weeks.
“His fourth down stop this past week was huge, huge for our team, where we’re at that moment. It’s a guy that embraces his role, works at his role. And when he’s in there and in the game, he’s getting his job done and playing well. He’s doing a great job for us.”
