Notre Dame DE Isaiah Foskey breaks all-time Fighting Irish sack record
Notre Dame has a new sack king. His name is Isaiah Foskey.
The senior defensive end broke Justin Tuck‘s all-time sack record vs. Boston College on Saturday in what is likely his final game at Notre Dame Stadium. Tuck had 24.5 career sacks from 2002-04. Foskey entered the game with 24.0, 8.5 of which came in the first 10 games of 2022. His 25th will likely be his most memorable.
The record breaker came on the final play of a dominant first half for the Notre Dame defense. Foskey fought off a block to take Eagles quarterback Emmett Morehead down for a loss of 11 yards to punctuate the Irish’s rout of the opposition in the first 30 minutes. Notre Dame led 37-0 at halftime.
The Notre Dame Stadium public address announcer immediately alerted the crowd of Foskey’s feat. He flashed a wave to fans while a graphic appeared on the video board of his name at the top of the all-time list. It was a fitting way for the half to come to a close, especially considering less than two hours prior Foskey ran onto the field during the Irish’s senior day ceremony. He received the largest ovation of any of the 25 Notre Dame seniors who participated.
Foskey has the third-best sacks per game average (0.63) in Notre Dame history behind Tuck’s 0.68 and Kory Minor‘s 0.66. Foskey played in four games as a true freshman in 2019 before playing in all 12 games for the Irish as a sophomore. He broke onto the scene with 4.5 sacks.
Foskey has started every Notre Dame game in each of the last two seasons. In 2021, he had the third-most single season sacks in program history with 11.0. Tuck had 13.5 in 2003. Stephon Tuitt had 12.0 in 2012. The NCAA did not recognize sacks as an official statistic until 2000.
According to a recent mock report from CBS Sports, Foskey is the No. 5 draft eligible edge rusher in the country and the No. 25 overall player. It’s possible he’s selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He’s assuredly go on the second day of the draft if he doesn’t get picked on the first. Twenty sacks in a two-season span will warrant that sort of attention.
