Frisco (Texas) Reedy class of 2023 wide receiver Kaleb Smith has announced his commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Smith picked up his first scholarship offer in November 2021 from Texas Tech. He visited Baylor later that month because former Bears’ and current Irish receivers coach Chansi Stuckey was interested in him but didn’t offer at that point.

He committed to the Red Raiders in February of this year, with Joey Maguire’s program being the only school that offered him. While he’s flown under the radar to most, Notre Dame has been working behind the scenes for the few couple months on Smith.

It’s Blue & Gold’s understanding that Notre Dame offered Smith a scholarship the weekend of Oct. 29, and he decommitted from Texas Tech Nov. 4. He officially visited Notre Dame for the Clemson game Nov. 5, and he mulled over staying in state and choosing the Red Raiders instead of the Fighting Irish. He ended the speculation by committing to Notre Dame on the first day of December.

Notre Dame now has four receiver commits in the 2023 class — three of whom are from the state of Texas. This includes Smith, Austin (Texas) Westlake’s Jaden Greathouse and Round Rock (Texas) Stony Point’s Braylon James. The Irish have five commits from the Lone Star State; Houston The Kinkaid School cornerback Micah Bell and Denton (Texas) Guyer safety Peyton Bowen have also pledged to join the receiver trio in South Bend.

The Fighting Irish are up to 26 commitments in the 2023 class. It’s a well-balanced class, with 14 offensive players and 12 defensive players committed. The Irish also have room to likely take one or two more prospects ahead of the December National Signing Day.

Smith ranks as On3’s No. 60 overall wide receiver and No. 73 prospect from the Lone Star State. His rating of 89 from On3 is higher than the industry standard, which has him at 85.67.

The On3 Consensus ranks him as the No. 935 recruit and No. 136 wide receiver nationally. With his flip to Notre Dame, the nation has its eyes on him and a potential bump across the various networks could be coming his way.

In 22 games across three seasons per MaxPreps, Smith has caught 99 passes for 1,385 yards and 15 touchdowns. During his senior season, with stats provided for 10 of 13 games, Smith hauled in 43 passes for 649 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Smith was named to the 2021 Texas District 5-5A Division I All-District second-team. He’s also played baseball and competed in track & field during his prep career.

He’s battled some injuries throughout his high school career, as he previously reported that he broke his ring finger in 2020 and fractured a toe in 2021.
