Tim Hyde on the Irish quarterback room after Tyler Buchner’s transfer

“You have three [quarterbacks on scholarship], and I think that’s the new norm. That’s how I look at this. The new normal is going to be three … When the Buchner [to Alabama] news broke, we were back to three quarterbacks, which seemed to be the plan all along after Pyne left, so to speak. People get nervous because Hartman could get hurt, but you still recruited these guys. You have Steve Angeli and Kenny Minchey. You have to play these guys and see how it goes.

“I’ve seen the rumblings about Notre Dame bringing in a transfer, but what’s he going to do? Sit on the bench and hang out? Angeli and Minchey need to get reps to prepare for 2024 when Hartman is gone. I like having three guys, and I think you’ll see Angeli or Minchey this year, especially in games where we expect Notre Dame to handle business early.

Hyde on Tyler Bucher transferring to Alabama

“When Notre Dame told him that they were bringing in Sam Hartman, he was probably thinking, ‘Okay, I’ll play spring ball, see what happens and let’s see if I can beat him out.’ I like using this analogy; if your boss brings in your replacement, are you sticking around? You’re going to start shopping around, throwing out feelers and see what other job you can get … I think that’s what Tyler did, and he went to the most comfortable place on Earth — maybe not with Nick Saban breathing down your neck — but it’s with Tommy Rees … They have a long, long relationship … Alabama is stacked all over the place. They just need a quarterback to hand off and deliver to the ball to their players who are all over the place.
