In a weekly YouTube live show, BlueandGold.com’s Tim Hyde and Mike Singer discuss and react to the latest news and notes in the world of Notre Dame football and recruiting.

Former Notre Dame and Chicago Bears defensive lineman and College Football Hall of Famer Chris Zorich joined the show to react to the perceived blunder by the Irish athletic department in their offensive coordinator search.

Notre Dame had Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig on campus for an interview last weekend and seemed primed to hire him to replace Tommy Rees, who left for the same position at Alabama. But Ludwig’s buyout with the Utes caused an issue. Who is to blame for this?

Additionally, the guys discuss the hiring of Wisconsin assistant Gino Guidugli as quarterbacks coach and the promotion of Gerad Parker to play-caller. Are these good moves for the staff?

Chris Zorich breaks down Andy Ludwig situation

“I’m sure other Notre Dame fans out there — myself included — are scratching their heads. We’re really not sure what actually happened … Having a chance to be an athletic director and being in that chair who hires and fires someone — there’s a process. Before you bring folks on campus, there’s a lot of research that goes into that. I currently work for an executive search firm; I know how to hire and fire folks. You know how to find their compensation. Utah is a public school; all that data is public knowledge. Someone didn’t do their research.

“When you have someone on campus, you’re pretty sure that they’re going to be the ‘guy.’ … And you’re trying to talk [Utah] down from a buyout that’s in there for a reason. I’m a fan boy obviously, but we are a premier program and [need to] start acting like one. You look at the success of other programs around the country — look at Tommy Rees and Alabama. There was rumor and then photos of a jet with a big ‘A’ on it in the South Bend regional airport. And soon afterwards, he’s the new Alabama offensive coordinator. That’s how it’s done. We were halfway there. … We had the guy on campus but failed to cross all the T’s and dot the I’s.”
