Goolsby on Marcus Freeman’s comments Monday that the buyout wasn’t an obstacle to land Utah’s Andy Ludwig

“The Swarbrick letter — we can’t overlook that. It was borderline bizarre to me. For Coach Freeman at his presser — that’s a little bit of CYA (cover your a**) for his boss in Jack Swarbrick, absolutely.

“There’s probably degrees of truth. Someone dropped the ball; there’s a fumble to some degree. We can all agree that this didn’t run smoothly. Where did the error come from? Who committed said error? Maybe we’ll never know, but Freeman is learning how to be a head coach. You have to stand up, face the firing squad and say the right things.”

“I think it’s a fun exercise to go back to when Brian Kelly left. So much has happened in 16 or 18 months. For the lack of a better word, it’s been interesting. You see the guys who Freeman is bringing in — Parker and Gino [Guidulgi] our new quarterbacks coach — he’s bringing in his guys. Is he leaning on his foxhole guys or is it whose coaching wagon do coaches want to hitch yourself to? In my experience, if you were hitched to Urban Meyer in his rise, you got a head coaching gig. If you hitched your wagon to Ty Willingham, you’re coaching in the CFL. Some of these young coaches — those guys are watching and thinking, ‘Let me watch this Marcus Freeman experiment play out before I jump on ship.’ Is it Freeman going with the foxhole guys or the coaches being hesitant. As long as we can recruit though, I’m optimistic. That’s all I care about, truly.”
