If you’re heading to South Bend for Boston College vs. Notre Dame, first of all: travel safely in the wintry weather. Second of all, bring a heavy jacket. Or two, or three.

According to The Weather Channel, Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. kickoff has a forecasted temperature of 26 degrees. If that holds up, it will be the coldest game at Notre Dame Stadium since it was 26 degrees when the Fighting Irish hosted BYU on Nov. 23, 2013. Notre Dame won that game, 23-13.

AccuWeather projects a high temperature of 29 degrees with a RealFeel of 13 degrees. Winds will be constantly blowing out of the southwest at a rate of 16 miles per hour with gusts up to 31 miles per hour. AccuWeather has a RealFeel low of 2 degrees in the evening to late-night hours.

Before the matchup with the Cougars, the coldest game at Notre Dame Stadium for a stretch of over 20 years was 24 degrees vs. Navy in 1991. The Irish beat the Midshipmen in runaway fashion, 38-0. Those statistics are courtesy of the official Notre Dame Football PR Twitter account.

The account went on to provide some interesting statistics for how the Irish have fared in the snow. Notre Dame is 17-1-2 all-time in snow games with the lone loss coming in 1895 to Indianapolis Artillery. The game was played on Brownson Hall Field.

Since 1930, the Irish are 5-0 in snow games at Notre Dame Stadium. Those results are as follows.

According to the National Weather Service, the WNDU station on Notre Dame’s campus picked up 5.2 inches of snow from midnight Friday through 10 a.m. That was already enough to break the Nov. 18 record for snowfall in South Bend, which was previously 4 inches in 1989.

The Weather Channel and AccuWeather are not predicting accumulating snow during the game Saturday. But as Friday afternoon showed, there could be a chance for flurries and light snow all day. The Irish have proven to perform very well in the elements before. Saturday might be an opportunity to continue the trend dating back 85 years.
