The son of a Notre Dame men’s basketball legend has a chance to be an Irish athlete himself. But in a different sport.

Notre Dame football offered a preferred walk-on spot to 2023 Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) Brother Rice tight end Henry Garrity, whose father, Pat, played basketball for the Irish from 1994-98. Garrity announced the PWO opportunity Sunday, shortly after he participated in Irish Invasion camp. He has FBS scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Central Michigan, UConn, Eastern Michigan and Navy. FCS programs Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Fordham, Holy Cross and Illinois State have also offered.

The elder Garrity was a double-figure scorer in all four seasons at Notre Dame and averaged 23.2 points per game as a senior. The 6-9 forward was the Big East Player of the Year in 1997 and a consensus second-team All-American in 1998. The Milwaukee Bucks made him the No. 19 overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. They traded his draft rights to the Dallas Mavericks before his rookie season, though, and the Mavericks quickly dealt his rights to the Phoenix Suns.
