Byron Spruell was an offensive lineman and co-captain of the Notre Dame football team roughly four decades ago. Now he’s the President of League Operations for the NBA.

Current Fighting Irish head football coach Marcus Freeman invited the man who has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA in finance from Notre Dame to speak to his players. This is what Spruell said.

“I’m literally 40 years from being a freshman. We didn’t have this beautiful facility. We had this space, but it was a lot different. All I’m saying is, it’s been a journey. It’s been a real journey. I hope you’ll appreciate that journey.

“As I look around this football field, it’s going to be the same thing; some of you will make it to the NFL, some of you won’t. But you will have a journey. You’ll have a journey. It’s interesting because many times on a Saturday, you can just imagine on a football Saturday, the text chain going around — where’s [Audric Estimé]? That run. Or that kick. Or [Tyler Buchner], that throw. That’s what we’re talking about 40 years later, right?

“So know your crew here today, but that crew is a lifetime of collegues and teammates that will be with you through the life journey.”
