Notre Dame hosted Carmel (Ind.) High class of 2023 EDGE Will Heldt for a visit over the weekend. It was his second time on campus, as he previously attended a game as a fan a couple years ago.

Heldt reports to BlueandGold.com that his return visit to Notre Dame was a successful one.

“Overall the visit was great,” Heldt said. “I got to sit in on some meetings, watch practice and have some talks with Coach [Marcus] Freeman and Coach [Al] Washington.

“I had been to Notre Dame before but only to watch a game, so it was nice to see everything from another point of view, and the campus and facilities were fantastic.”

Heldt left campus with a strong view of head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive line coach Al Washington.

“I was very impressed by both of them,” Heldt added.

Heldt holds scholarship offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Purdue, Wake Forest, Miami (Ohio), Northwestern, Minnesota, Ohio, Central Michigan, Toledo and others. Notre Dame hasn’t offered yet, but the Irish staff will continue to evaluate the 6-6, 240-pound in-state product.

“Coach Washington is likely going to come out in the spring to one of my practices and watch me workout — and then we’ll see where things go from there,” Heldt explained.

Heldt visited a handful of schools last fall and is looking to hit the road more in the near future.

“At the moment I don’t have any visits set in stone, but I will definitely get back out to see more places in the upcoming month,” he said.

Heldt does not have an On3 Consensus ranking yet, but two of the four major recruiting services have three-star rankings assigned to him. Additionally, Rivals lists Heldt as the nation’s No. 9 player from Indiana, while 247 Sports views him as the No. 55 EDGE nationally and No. 14 prospect from the Hoosier State.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) currently gives Iowa a slight end to land Heldt at 31.5 percent. Purdue, Iowa State, Wake Forest and Miami (Ohio) all have equal odds at 11 percent.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine was released to the public in December. The On3 engineering group teamed up with Spiny.ai to create the industry’s first algorithm and machine learning-based product to predict where athletes will attend college.

It factors in machine learning, expert predictions, social sentiment, visits, and historical trends. Additionally, expert predictions are still a big piece of the RPM equation.
