Newsstand: Notre Dame to face Virginia Tech in ACC Tournament Thursday night
It’s buzzer beater season. Also known as, simply, March.
Inbounding the ball from the far baseline with 6.7 seconds left in overtime Wednesday, Virginia Tech needed two points to tie Clemson and three to beat ’em. Why not go for it all?
Sophomore guard Darius Maddox received a pass and dribbled calmly but confidently up the left side of the floor. The pace with which he moved didn’t scream get to the hole. It said pull up and pop.
Bang. Onions. Whatever you want to say, the ball went through the hoop.
Notre Dame (22-9) will play Maddox and Virginia Tech (20-12) Thursday night at 7 p.m in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal matchup at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Fighting Irish lost to the Hokies 79-73 on the road Jan. 15.
