Tim Hyde’s instant reactions to Notre Dame’s 2022 spring game

On quarterback Drew Pyne’s day

“To be brutally honest, it was bad. It was not a good performance, but it’s spring. It’s hard to judge because you’re mixing and matching offensive linemen and wide receivers here and there. But it was not sharp. There were not a lot of crisp throws. There was a lot of miscommunication for a guy going into his third year. He’s throwing short and receivers are going long; he threw long once and the receiver ran short. That was odd to see.

“There was not much vertical, but they weren’t game planning for this. It’s not like they’re scheming against the Buckeyes for this. But yeah, you sit back and think about what Buchner would’ve done. Is he that much better? Is he the same? We don’t know. It’s going to be interesting to see how he compares with Pyne.”

On quarterback Steve Angeli’s day

“He looked a little bit calmer. That’s the make up [of him] … He was that dude today. The screen pass he hit to Price was perfect; it was beautiful … On that last drive, he took them 10 plays for 78 yards. He got them down there with the running clock and rotating a ton of guys. Not bad — it was nice.”

On the defensive line play

“I think the starting defensive line is going to be outstanding. Just wait until they get Jayson Ademilola back at the three-technique. Rylie Mills at the edge — is he a true pass rushing force? He’s a beast, tall as can be and has long arms, but what’s he going to give you on 3rd and 8 or is he going to be out of the game? I thought Lacey and Cross looked good too.”
