Micah Shrewsberry’s Notre Dame basketball roster makeover has reached its latter stages. The Irish are at nine scholarship players, five of whom have committed since mid-April. All are signed and set to enroll in June. Before any of those five pledged, though, five players hopped in the transfer portal between the end of the season and mid-April.

Here’s a look at every addition to and departure from the 2023-24 roster so far.

Notre Dame basketball roster transfer additions

Forward Kebba Njie

Previous school: Penn State

2022-23 stats (37 games, 26 starts): 3.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, 52.0 FG% in 14.3 minutes per game.

Years left: 3

Njie (6-foot-10, 237 pounds) followed Shrewsberry from Penn State, where he was a starter but a role player on an NCAA Tournament team. He’s a former top-150 recruit who played at nearby La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere. He did most of his scoring last year on lobs and dump-offs near the rim.

Guard Julian Roper II

Previous school: Northwestern

2022-23 stats (15 games, 0 starts): 4.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 45.3 FG%, 42.1 3FG% in 21.4 minutes per game.

Years left: 2

An ankle injury limited Roper (6-foot-3, 180) to just 1 game after Jan. 23. Before it, though, he was a primary bench option for a team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He was a two-year contributor for Northwestern and has some scoring upside.

Incoming freshmen

Forward Carey Booth

Ranking: four-star, No. 56 overall in the On3 Industry Ranking

School: Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy.

The 6-foot-10, 205-pound Booth signed with Shrewsberry at Penn State and was released from his letter of intent when Shrewsberry left. He committed to Notre Dame May 2, shortly after a visit to campus. He originally chose the Nittany Lions over Ohio State, Stanford, Texas and Vanderbilt. He’s the son of Denver Nuggets general manager and 11-year NBA center Calvin Booth.

Guard Logan Imes

Ranking: three-star, No. 208 overall

School: Zionsville (Ind.)

Imes is also a former Penn State signee and committed to Notre Dame May 3. He previously chose Penn State from an offer list that included Butler, Creighton, Drake, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He’s regarded as a high-end 3-point shooter.

Guard Braeden Shrewsberry

Ranking: three-star, No. 225 overall

School: State College Area (Pa.)

Micah Shrewsberry’s oldest son is following his dad from Penn State to Notre Dame. Braeden committed to the Nittany Lions in November 2021 over offers from Xavier, George Washington and St. Joseph’s. He’s one of six finalists for Pennsylvania Mr. Basketball.

Guard Markus Burton

Ranking: three-star, No. 158 overall

School: Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn

Burton isn’t a new addition. He signed with Notre Dame in November, but did not ask for a release during the coaching change. He’s the lone fall signee to stick around. Two others — four-star guard Parker Friedrichsen and three-star guard Brady Dunlap — were granted their releases in January shortly after Mike Brey announced he would step aside at the end of the year.

Burton was named Indiana Mr. Basketball as a senior and averaged a state-best 30.3 points per game last season. He added 5.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.6 steals per game. He shot 58.2 percent overall and 42.1 percent on 3-pointers.

Returning players

Notre Dame has three scholarship players who returned from last season’s roster: senior forward Matt Zona, senior guard Tony Sanders Jr. and junior guard JR Konieczny. They combined to play in 25 games last year. None has averaged more than 7.0 minutes per game in a season. Konieczny took a redshirt in 2022-23.

Departed players

Notre Dame’s entire 2022 class went in the transfer portal. Guard JJ Starling transferred to Syracuse, forward Dom Campbell is headed to Howard and forward Ven-Allen Lubin has not yet announced his next destination. Starling, a former five-star recruit, was fourth on the team in scoring last season (11.2 points per game). Lubin started seven games and averaged 6.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per outing. Campbell played 10 games and scored 7 points.

Grad student guards Cormac Ryan and Robby Carmody also entered the portal to find another place to play their sixth and final seasons. Ryan, who is also going through the NBA Draft process, committed to North Carolina. Carmody is headed to Mercer. Ryan (12.3 points per game) was the Irish’s second-leading scorer, while Carmody has played just seven games since 2020-21 because of several serious injuries.

The transfer portal window for undergrads closed May 11. Grad transfers can enter at any time, but none of the three returning players is graduating this spring. Transferring players do not need to have picked a school by May 11.
