Brady Dunlap became the first Notre Dame signee to request a release from his letter of intent after the Jan. 19 announcement that Mike Brey will step aside as head coach at the end of the season. The school will grant it, Brey said Thursday.

“We talked at length about that,” Brey said. “We fully support that. I told all of [the signees] I would recommend that if I were your father. They all want to keep this option open. I told them I’d stay in touch with them on the coaching search to help them.”

Dunlap, a three-star small forward from Studio City (Calif.) Harvard-Westlake, requested his release Tuesday. He’s the No. 149 overall player in the 2023 On3 Consensus and chose the Irish over San Diego State in September. Providence, Nebraska, Rice and Colorado were also considered.

Notre Dame has two other signees in the 2023 class: Bixby (Okla.) four-star guard Parker Friedrichsen and Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn three-star guard Markus Burton. They are ranked No. 116 and 147 in the consensus, respectively, and signed their letters of intent in November.

“Sam Hartman’s a dude. Now he’s not the biggest guy in the world and there are a couple concerns … But when he’s on, go back and watch his performance against Clemson, when he’s on, he is as accurate as they come in the game. He’s got great instincts.”
