Brady Dunlap became the first Notre Dame signee to request and be granted a release from his letter of intent following the Jan. 19 announcement of head coach Mike Brey’s end-of-season departure. A second one has followed suit, as Brey indicated would happen.

Bixby (Okla.) four-star guard Parker Friedrichsen has been granted his release, he told On3 national basketball recruiting analyst Joe Tipton Saturday morning.

“Due to the announcement of Coach Brey’s retirement at the end of the season, I have received my release from Notre Dame and will explore other options at this time,” Friedrichsen said. “I am happy for Coach Brey and want to wish him well in his next step. I can’t thank the staff enough for recruiting me.”

Brey, speaking with reporters before Thursday’s practice, said Friedrichsen told him of plans to decommit. He said Notre Dame would grant the requests, even though his initial post-retirement announcement message to the signees was to stay the course and see who the program hired as his replacement before making any major decisions.

“I told all of [the signees] I would recommend that if I were your father,” Brey said Thursday. “They all want to keep this option open. I told them I’d stay in touch with them on the coaching search to help them.”

Friedrichsen is the No. 116 overall player in the 2023 On3 Consensus and the highest-rated of the three players who signed with Notre Dame in November. He’s a four-star prospect and the No. 108 overall player in the On3 Top 150. Dunlap, a three-star wing from Studio City (Calif.) Harvard-Westlake, is the No. 149 player in the consensus. The Irish’s lone remaining 2023 signee is Mishawaka (Ind.) three-star point guard Markus Burton, the No. 147 overall player.

The 6-foot-4, 165-pound Friedrichsen chose Notre Dame in September over Davidson and Nebraska. He also considered Rice and Northwestern, and was previously committed to Oklahoma State. He averaged 19.3 points and 2.9 assists, shooting 43.6 percent on 3-pointers while playing with KC Run GMC on the Under Armour Circuit last summer.
