Notre Dame men’s basketball has added a key non-conference game to its 2022-23 schedule.

The Irish will play St. Bonaventure on Nov. 25, 2022 in the showcase game of the Gotham Classic in Belmont Park, N.Y., per a Tuesday announcement. The game will be at UBS Arena, which opened in November and is home to the NHL’s New York Islanders. Tickets will go on sale at a later date.

Notre Dame and St. Bonaventure have not played since Dec. 22, 1994, a game the Irish won 57-54 in South Bend. They hold a 5-2 all-time lead in the series. The Bonnies are 20-8 overall and 12-5 in the Atlantic 10 this season. They reached the NCAA Tournament in 2021. As it stands, all but one scholarship player on their roster has eligibility for next season. They’re led by 15th-year head coach Mark Schmidt.

The Gotham Classic joins a road game at Marquette, a home game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and a neutral-site meeting with Kentucky on Notre Dame’s 2022-23 non-conference schedule. Dates have not been set for any of them. There’s a chance Mike Brey and Kentucky head coach John Calipari agree not to play next year’s contest, which is the final installment of a three-game series. The Irish won the first two matchups — 2020 in Lexington, Ky., and 2021 in South Bend.

The Crossroads Classic, held annually in Indianapolis since 2011-12, will cease after this season. Notre Dame played Indiana, Butler and Purdue on a rotating schedule in the event’s 11 years. The Irish lost to Indiana 64-56 on Dec. 18 in their final Crossroads game.

The ACC’s 20-game conference slate means Notre Dame can play a maximum of 11 games in the non-conference portion. The Irish’s full 2022-23 schedule won’t be released until summer or early fall. The ACC has not yet announced conference game matchups for next season.

Notre Dame is 22-9 this year and went 15-5 in the ACC, earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Its first tournament game is Thursday night against one of North Carolina State, Clemson or Virginia Tech. As of Tuesday afternoon, the Irish are a projected No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament, per BracketMatrix.com. Starting center Paul Atkinson Jr. (12.6 points per game) is the only player on the roster without eligibility for next season.
