One of the most important pieces in directing Notre Dame to the 2022 College World Series could be looking to carry on his college career elsewhere. Freshman All-American pitcher Jack Findlay has entered the NCAA transfer portal, BlueandGold.com learned Wednesday afternoon.

Findlay notified Notre Dame of his intent to transfer by the July 1 deadline to be immediately eligible next year, a source said. He has also requested not to be contacted by other schools. The same source said Findlay has yet to make a decision.

Findlay recorded four saves in the NCAA Tournament alone. He came up big in mid- and late-innings when Notre Dame needed to shut down powerful opponents. His five scoreless innings against No. 1 Tennessee in the Knoxville Super Regional was one of the best pitching performances of the entire college baseball season. It sent Notre Dame to Omaha for the third time ever.

Findlay went 6-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 20 appearances. The first-year lefty from Ledgewood, N.J., started eight games and struck out 54 batters in 49.2 innings. He only walked 16, and opposing hitters were batting a mere .194 against him.

Findlay is the fifth Irish pitcher to enter the transfer portal in the last week. He joins fellow rising sophomores Caden Aoki, Roman Kimball, rising fifth-year senior Alex Rao and rising sixth-year senior Austin Temple. All five could return to the Irish roster in 2023, but that appears rather unlikely.

Rao is a prospect for the upcoming MLB Draft. Temple, the Irish’s No. 2 starting pitcher in 2022, could be too. He already transferred once in his college career as well, further complicating his situation. Aoki, Kimball and Findlay are good candidates for a fresh start considering how early it is in their college careers, meanwhile.

Former Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett was formally introduced at at Florida State, his alma mater, last week. The Irish have yet to announce Jarrett’s replacement. He went 86-32 in three seasons and guided the program to the NCAA Tournament Super Regional each of the last two years. This year’s College World Series appearance was the Irish’s first since 2002. They went 41-17 overall, 16-11 in the ACC this season and beat two top-16 seeds to advance to Omaha.
