Newsstand: Notre Dame women’s basketball signees shine in weekend showcases
One day before Notre Dame made just 2 of 22 attempts from behind the three-point line in a 60-50 loss at North Carolina, Fighting Irish class of 2023 signee Emma Risch drilled nine threes in one game versus Marietta (Ga.) Kell High. Risch’s Melbourne (Fla.) Palm Bay beat Kell 67-59 in the championship game of the Atlanta St. James She Got Game Classic.
Risch scored 39 points in the game and won MVP honors. She’ll add an element of outside shooting the Irish could certainly use next season, especially with graduate student guard Dara Mabrey set to depart from the program. Mabrey has a team-leading 29 made threes in 14 games. The next player in line on the Irish roster, sophomore guard Sonia Citron, has 16.
Fellow five-star 2023 Irish signee Hannah Hidalgo went off over the weekend, too. The Haddonfield (N.J.) Paul IV product put up 41 points in a 76-44 victory in the Blue Star Invitational in Philadelphia. She also won the game’s MVP award. Hidalgo is the No. 1 point guard and the No. 5 overall player in the class according to ESPN.
