It appears Notre Dame tight ends coach John McNulty is headed to Chestnut Hill to replace former Boston College offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, who left for Pittsburgh.

BlueandGold.com is told that McNulty informed the Notre Dame tight end room on Monday morning that he would be taking the job as the leader of the Boston College offense.

McNulty, 53, has extensive coaching experience dating back to the early 1990s. The position coach has 15 years of NFL experience, serving most recently at that level as the tight ends coach for the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers from 2016-17. Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees was an offensive assistant for the Chargers in 2016 while McNulty was there.

The position coach has mentored numerous NFL stars, including wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin while he was the receivers coach for the Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Marcus Mariota while he was the quarterbacks coach for the Tennessee Titans.

At the college level, McNulty has spent time as a graduate assistant at Michigan, a position coach at Connecticut and an offensive coordinator at Rutgers. Prior to coming to Notre Dame in 2020, McNulty was an offensive analyst at his alma mater, Penn State, in 2019.

He inherits an offense led by former Irish quarterback Phil Jurkovec. The rising fifth year quarterback missed nearly two months of the 2021 season with a hand injury.

All in all, the Eagles offense struggled in an ACC with multiple high-powered offensive attacks. Boston College ranked last in the conference in total offense (350.3 yards per game) and 11th in scoring offense (24.7 points per contest) in 2021.

Notre Dame hosts Boston College in South Bend on Nov. 19.

Irish offensive staff to look much different in 2022

With McNulty’s departure, Rees will now have an entirely new offensive staff under him for next season. Former running backs coach Lance Taylor is now the offensive coordinator at Louisville, and Notre Dame moved on from former offensive line coach Jeff Quinn and former receivers coach Del Alexander. The former has been replaced with Harry Hiestand, while the latter has been replaced with Chansi Stuckey.

It should not be too difficult to fill the tight ends coach spot given Notre Dame’s recent success at the position. Whoever takes over will have the opportunity to coach one of the nation’s top tight ends in Michael Mayer, along with six additional scholarship tight ends.
