The February Signing Period is here and Ohio State is set to once again bring in one of the country’s best recruiting classes. Lettermen Row is tracking the Buckeyes recruiting news throughout the signing period as 2022 commitments officially join the Ohio State football program. The latest Letter of Intent is in: Carson Hinzman has signed with the Buckeyes.

COLUMBUS – It was a Buckeyes vs. Badgers battle for more than a half a year for Carson Hinzman.

That fight has officially gone to the scorecard. And Ohio State won the belt.

Hinzman has signed his National Letter of Intent as the Saint Croix Central (Wisc.) four-star offensive lineman has ended his recruitment.

What does this addition do for Ohio State? Let’s break it down.

Who is Carson Hinzman?

Carson Hinzman is a versatile, athletic 6-foot-4, 265-pound interior offensive lineman who committed to Ohio State on Jan. 4.

On3 Ranking: 150 overall, 11 IOL, 3 Wisconsin
Hometown: Hammond, Wisconsin
High School: Saint Croix Central (Wisc.)

Scouting summary:  “Not many kids in this nation are 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds with low body fat that can beat skill players in agility drills. [Hinzman] can take one step to dunk a basketball. In person he looks like he’s about 240 because of how he carries his weight and has the frame to put on so much more mass as he develops through college.

“He’s the nicest guy you could meet. But on the field? He plays like you harassed his grandma and he’s trying to punish you for it. That’s what makes him special and a one of a kind interior lineman at the next level.”

– John Tackmann, Hinzman’s coach at St. Croix Central

How did he end up at Ohio State?

Hinzman made multiple visits to Ohio State over the summer and fall, and he found an environment he never imagined he’d really consider.

“I never expected I’d actually be looking into schools besides Wisconsin,” Hinzman told Lettermen Row. “Growing up a Badgers fan I was like ‘Man, I want to be at Wisconsin.’”

It’s rare to go into Wisconsin and beat the home-town Badgers for a big-time lineman, but the Ohio State culture helped carry the day for Hinzman.

“The Buckeyes just spoke to me,” Hinzman said. “I really loved hanging out with the guys, the guys there are awesome. Obviously the coaching staff is great and I love the culture there. It’s a really good opportunity.”
